Overview of Research Assistant Internship Program

The GIRE RA Internship is a 12-week program offering a comprehensive research experience. A 3-week pre-curriculum
with GIRE consultants is part of the program to make sure participants are prepared to collaborate with professors
on research. After this, interns will spend 8 weeks doing 'Virtual Research Assistant' duties. Once the program has been finished,
participants will receive a certificate of accomplishment and references from those who have accomplished the research projects successfully.
  • Step 01

    Ice breaking

    Students taking part in the program will have a one-on-one introductory conversation with their paired professor and converse about what the student is interested in and the professor's research.

  • Step 02

    Pre-curriculum

    Preparing for Success: Prior to commencing the Research Assistant Internship with a professor, students will take part in preparatory classes supervised by GIRE consultant.

  • Step 03

    Virtual research assistant

    Meeting with the professor either individually or as a group for one hour every one or two weeks, depending on the professor's requirements, to gain insight into their research process.

  • Step 04

    Completion

    A letter of reference composed by the professor will be given just to those students who have satisfied the professor's standards. Students who finish all programs will receive a GIRE certificate of completion.

  • Application
    Interested students complete an online application form, providing their personal information, educational background, and relevant experiences. They may also be asked to submit a statement of purpose and a resume or CV.
  • Application Review
    The selection committee reviews all submitted applications, carefully evaluating the qualifications, statement of purpose, and resume/CV of each candidate.
  • Selection
    Based on the application review, a limited number of candidates are selected for the internship program. The selection is made considering the qualifications and fit for specific research projects.
  • Internship Prep Session
    Prior to the start of the internship, selected candidates may participate in a pre-program preparation phase. This phase aims to provide interns with essential information and resources to ensure a smooth transition into the internship program. It may involve orientation sessions, webinars, or online materials that familiarize interns with program expectations, research methodologies, and any specific tools or software they will be using during the internship.
  • Professional
    Research Overview
    As part of the pre-program preparation, interns may receive an overview of professional research practices. This session or material will provide interns with insights into the research process, including identifying research questions, conducting literature reviews, formulating hypotheses, designing experiments or studies, collecting and analyzing data, and interpreting results. The overview will help interns understand the broader context of their research projects and develop a strong foundation in professional research methodologies.
  • Workshop on Drafting a Professional Resume
    Recognizing the importance of a well-crafted resume, interns may have the opportunity to participate in a workshop focused on drafting a professional resume. The workshop will guide interns through the process of creating a resume that highlights their relevant skills, experiences, and academic achievements. They will learn about the best practices for resume formatting, content organization, and tailoring their resume to showcase their suitability for research positions. The workshop may include interactive activities and examples to illustrate effective resume-writing techniques.

    The internship program begins on the specified start date. Interns may be provided with orientation sessions or preparatory materials to familiarize themselves with the research projects and expectations.

    Each intern is assigned to a distinguished faculty member with whom they collaborate closely throughout the internship. They engage in regular communication and receive guidance and mentorship from the faculty member.

    Interns undertake various research-related tasks, which may include data entry, literature review, data analysis, and other responsibilities as assigned by the faculty member. They actively contribute to ongoing research projects.
