Hello, this is
GIRE!
We would like to introduce you to the importance of new drug development and the experience of professionally recording research on it!

[The importance of medical and pharmaceutical development through COVID-19]

The
coronavirus pandemic, which has resulted in such a huge number of deaths, has further highlighted the importance of medical and pharmaceutical development. The COVID-19 pandemic, including the absence of a suitable vaccine and treatment, has caused significant morbidity and mortality not only for patients but also for healthcare providers.

[What is medicine?]

Medicine is the science and practice of caring for patients and managing the diagnosis, prognosis, prevention, treatment, palliation, and health promotion of injury or disease. Medicine includes a variety of medical practices developed to maintain and restore health through the prevention and treatment of disease.

[What is a virus?]

Viruses or filterable microbial toxins are contagious infectious agents that can live only within the living cells of other organisms and are intermediate entities between living and non-living organisms (non-cellular semi-living organisms). It is also an ultramicroscopic, filterable pathogen.

[What is an enterovirus?]

Enterovirus is an RNA virus
, and more than 90 serotypes have been reported to date, of which about 65 serotypes are known to infect humans.

Individual cases or epidemic cases occur around the world every year, mainly in temperate climate regions during the summer or early fall. In Korea, aseptic meningitis caused by enteroviruses occurs periodically every 2-3 years. Enterovirus infection was designated as a statutory infectious disease (designated infectious disease) in June 2009, and laboratory surveillance is being conducted. Looking at the distribution of enterovirus detection throughout the year, the highest detection rate occurs mainly between late spring and early fall, from May to September. Additionally, the age group with the highest incidence was infants aged 2 to 5 years old (43.9%), followed by infants under 1 year old (23.3%).

[Why is drug research necessary?]

▶To find chemicals or combinations of chemicals that have a positive effect on the human body.

▶To determine whether the study drug is safe and effective in treating the disease or condition.

▶To find the optimal dose of the drug.

▶To determine how different people respond to the study drug, including children, adults, patients with certain diseases or conditions, and others.

▶Regulatory agencies, such as the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), use information from drug studies to approve investigational drugs and approve them for treatment.

▶To determine whether to make it available to the general public.

[New drug development research: Professor Jun Wang]

GIRE, together with
Professor Jun Wang of Rutger University, supports specialized research experience using new drug development and coding for viruses, including these enteroviruses.

The professor is conducting more sophisticated and specialized research using data visualization for students wishing to major in pharmacy, medical school, chemistry, and bio-related fields. Virus research and new drug research in specific fields can appeal to students' unique strengths and originality.

With GIRE, high school students receive direct support from consultants and conduct unprecedented research in research fields they are curious about, acquiring specialized knowledge, discovering new facts, and considering ways to utilize the research results. Students who complete this course will be issued a letter of recommendation and a certificate of completion. Furthermore, they will be submitting their paper to a promising high school academic journal.
