A high level of extracurricular activities is essential for admission to American universities.
Among many extracurricular activities, middle and high school research experience is essential for admission to top universities in the United States.
This is because high school research experiences leave a much stronger impression on college admissions officers than other extracurricular activities.
In the United States, there are various research and internship programs for high school students to gain research experience. Today, we will introduce you to these research programs!

1.     Memorial Sloan Kettering Summer Student Program

Memorial Sloan Kettering (MSK) is one of the most renowned cancer centers in the world. MSK's Human Oncology and Cancer Etiology Program (HOPP) is a summer student program that allows students to conduct independent research projects while receiving structured training in the field of medical life. During the eight-week program, students are mentored by a postdoctoral fellow, graduate student, or research technician. At the end of the research period, students present their projects.

2.     Rockefeller University Summer Science Research Program

Rockefeller University has a summer science research program that provides research opportunities for high school students. In this program, high school students can conduct practical, innovative research over seven weeks using the resources of Rockefeller University. At the same time, you can receive guidance from top scientists! You must be 16 years or older to participate in this program.

3.     Research Science Institute (RSI)

RSI is an annual program held at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). 80 outstanding high school students from around the world come together to participate in this program. The program is free and has a unique curriculum that combines on-campus coursework with off-campus science and technology studies. Participants have access to mentoring from experienced scientists and researchers before publishing their findings. Doesn’t it make you excited just thinking about having a researcher working at MIT as your mentor, rather than a school teacher?

4.     Applied Research and Innovation in Science and Engineering (ARISE)

Open to high school sophomores and juniors, the ARISE is taught at the college level and is taught in conjunction with research in laboratories in the fields of civil and civil engineering, mechanical and electrical engineering, and robotics. Students are mentored by graduate or postdoctoral students at NYU Tandon School of Engineering for seven weeks. Since this program is an internship format, participants can expect to receive a pay of at least $500!

5.     Simmons Summer Research Program

The Simons Summer Research Program allows high school students to conduct hands-on research in fields such as science, math, or engineering while working with a faculty mentor. Because you are conducting research by joining an actual research team, you can learn first-hand laboratory equipment and technology! Since this program is also an internship, you can expect to receive a certain amount of salary. :) This program is taught at Stony Brook University.

So far, we have looked into research programs at research institutes and universities in the U.S. for high school students. Using these research programs, top students in the U.S. are accumulating research experience (research and education) starting in high school.

However, since most programs are conducted in the United States, it can be a burden for students attending international schools or preparing for entrance exams in Korea. Taking into account the difficulties and needs experienced by Korean students, GIRE provides a curriculum that allows students to conduct high-quality research in Korea under the guidance of researchers and faculty at American research institutes.
