Today, we would like to share helpful information with students or parents who wish to apply to America's top-tier Summer Research Program.

Many students and parents are often interested in and preparing for Summer Camp to have a more meaningful summer vacation. In the case of Top-tier Summer Camp, it is essential to prepare in advance because it is a competitive summer camp supported all over the world.

Today, we will introduce in detail about the Applied Research Innovations in Science and Engineering Summer Camp, one of the top-tier summer camps.

ARISE is a summer camp hosted by NYU. NYU Tandon partners with K-12 schools, teachers, and students to foster careers in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM).

There are many K-12 STEM courses. 


The first is Computer Engineering for Good (CE4G). Students analyze real-world problems using technologies from developing countries and use computer and electrical engineering skills to implement innovative 'solutions' to ensure sustainability.


The second is Cyber Security for Computer Science (CS4CS). This course, Introduction to Cybersecurity and Computer Science Fundamentals for High School Students, is intended for students without any experience or background in cybersecurity or computer programming.


The third is Design, Invent & Innovate (DII). This program teaches high school students the innovative fundamental principles of science and engineering using modern examples and teaches them how to design and build their innovations.


​In addition, there are many programs prepared for various K-12 students, such as Immersive Summer Interacting with Technology and Engineering (I-SITE) and Innovation, Entrepreneurship, and the Science of Smart Cities (ieSoSC).


Among them, today we will explain in detail about Applied Research Innovations in Science and Engineering (ARISE).

ARISE is a seven-week program that includes high-level, hands-on research experience in a New York University professor's lab and mentoring by a graduate student or postdoctoral researcher. This program is open to students with a strong interest in a career in a STEM field.

 Students living in New York who will graduate in 10th or 11th grade in June 2024

ARISE is an opportunity-driven program that focuses on providing a rigorous laboratory experience under the mentorship of New York University cutting-edge research professors. This is a seven-week, full-day summer program held onsite at our Tandon and Washington Square campuses. Open to students residing in New York City with a strong interest in STEM fields. Students receive training in college-level research, expository writing, scientific method, professional development, and ethics, and conclude the program with a professional poster presentation. Course content covers cross-disciplinary topics and STEM fields such as bio and molecular engineering, chemical engineering, robotics, computer science, cognitive intelligence, and machine learning. This is achieved through hands-on work in research laboratories.

[Application]

We will tell you what you need to check before filling out the application.


First, you need to verify information about your academic records. You must enter your cumulative GPA from the time you entered high school to the most recent semester. You will also need to enter your grade point average in high school science and math classes and the classes you have taken in those subjects.


Second, you should write about your preferred field of study in STEM. You should carefully read the lab descriptions on the research pages and choose the STEM field that interests you the most.


Third, you must write a Support Letter. To increase the passing rate, a support letter from an adult other than a family member is required. This adult should be someone who can provide information about the applicant's academic record, work ethic, interests, etc.


Fourth, you must write answers to various questions in ESSAY. As for the ESSAY question:

Why are you interested in participating in this program?

What parts of the program are you most interested in?

This question asks why you chose the ARISE program and what aspects of the program you found interesting. This is to answer questions about whether the program was recommended by a friend and whether any features make it different from other programs.  


What STEM activities have you undertaken in furthering your STEM interest?
This question should include specific examples of your participation in STEM-related activities during your academic career. For example, you might write about how you taught yourself coding, your interest in science TV shows like "BILL NYE THE SCIENCE GUY", or your Google searches on various science topics.

 


Choose one of the following essay prompts

- The lessons we take from obstacles we encounter can be fundamental to later success. Recount a time when you faced a challenge, setback, or failure.

How did it affect you, and what did you learn from the experience?

- Describe a problem you've solved or a problem you'd like to solve.

It can be an intellectual challenge, a research query, an ethical dilemma—anything that is of personal importance, no matter the scale.

Explain its significance to you and what steps you took or could be taken to identify a solution.

- Discuss an accomplishment, event, or realization that sparked a period of personal growth and a new understanding of yourself or others.

 

“Identify one way that you think your experience in ARISE will impact your STEM ambitions.”

This question asks how ARISE connects with students' academic or personal passions over the years and their goals and plans for those areas of their lives for the coming years.

 

​“Tell us how you currently make a difference or the ways you plan on making a difference when it comes to supporting diversity in STEM.”

It is very important to express your interests and capabilities well in response to the essay questions.
